The second Sikh temple to be built in Glasgow in as many years is taking shape on Berkeley Street with completion of its polished limestone facade and a striking gold glass reinforced plastic dome.

Designed by Calford Seaden Architects the Central Gurdwara will play host to up to 1,500 worshippers, with three floors of underground parking offering space for 257 vehicles, which will be made publicly available when not in use.

Defined by a focus on decoration such as carved doors and balustrades the build is centred upon a top floor prayer hall, with the holy book placed at the highest point of the structure so no-one can walk over it.

Incorporating a community centre, education suite, library, classrooms and office space the £15m facility is being built in phases with the second phase construction phase reliant on further donations.

Limestone panels have been hand carved in India before being shipped to the UK.
