GIA launch Royston Spire lighting design competition
April 8 2015
The Glasgow Institute of Architects, in partnership with the Rosemount Development Trust, has launched a lighting design competition for the refurbishment of the Royston Spire.Architects and students are being invited to put forward proposals for the hilltop landmark to give the scheme renewed prominence following the demolition of neighboring tower blocks.
The £40k project is intended to preserve the landmark for future generations and improve accessibility whilst devising alternative uses for four prominent clock faces, none of which are operational.
Competition winners will be announced on 4 June with it intended to realize the completed scheme by the end of the year to mark the solitary spire’s 150th anniversary.
An open day will be held at the former church on 18 April during which tours of the spire will be offered to visitors.
