Wetherspoons reveal Crystal Palace hotel intent
March 16 2015
Pub chain Wetherspoons has revealed its intent to build a hotel on vacant ground adjacent to its Crystal Palace pub on Glasgow’s Jamaica Street in the form of a proposal of application notice. The prominent gap site has lain vacant for at least a decade following the failure of a succession of hotel plans to materialise for the plot, most recently a nine storey proposal by ARM Architects.
Now proprietor of the pub next door has taken on the site as part of a nationwide investment in the hotels sector.
In a statement the applicants noted: “The hotel has been designed as a calming place in stark contrast to the vibrant streets outside. With a neutral palette and a focus on light and materiality to enhance the visitors experience and achieve a wow factor. The design incorporates extensive use of glass and reflective materials which aim to capture some of the essence and awe of its namesake."
Designed by Brighton based KDPA indicative plans show a blonde sandstone façade with full height glazing and an ornate iron gate modelled on nearby Central Station’s metalwork.

Any development should at least respect the context within which it sits, so I'd expect a better attempt at addressing key roof lines, scale/massing, alignment of floor levels etc. This building could have been plucked from anywhere and dumped here.
