East Kilbride schools campus given go-ahead
February 26 2015
South Lanarkshire Council has given the go-ahead to a £12m education campus incorporating both Halfmerke and West Mains Primary within a new build school and community nursery.Brought together under one roof on parkland to the west of the existing school the project will deliver 16 classrooms together with a range of quiet, therapy and sensory rooms for pupils with additional support needs.
Designed by Stallan-Brand each school will retain its separate identity whilst sharing a library, hall and dining room within a split level volume faced with light grey and buff brick.
Access will be provided along a central spine lit by clerestory windows off which will be accessed east and west facing classrooms. A central feature stair within this space offers circulation and orientation to the upper level.
A supporting statement read: “The contact between the robust utilitarian brick sections and colourful flashes, provides the opportunity to utilise the building form to enhance the learning environment of the pupils and clearly identify pupil and public features.
“Classrooms are well proportioned with large volume spaces benefitting from shared daylight from the circulation areas, allowing natural cross flow ventilation.”
Halfmerke is the latest in a series of schools to be designed by the practice on behalf of the local authority, following on from the likes of Lanark Primary.
