Millenium Hotel expansion plan submitted
Millenium and Copthorne Hotels have lodged plans to expand their George Square address to replace rooms that will be lost as a result of Queen Street Station expansion.

This will see a new masonry clad insertion to the rear of the existing historic frontage, gradiated in height to meet the bulk of a planned BDP designed MSCP.

Investigative work will also be undertaken to remove paintwork to expose stonework whilst a 1986 glazed conservatory will be removed, allowing reinstatement of the original façade.

In a design statement Hamiltons architects noted: “The needed masking elements will be treated architecturally to mediate between the historic hotel building and the contemporary car park building.

“A new civic space is positioned at the heart of these proposals that echoes the “courtyard” form of development found in neighbouring blocks.“

Further revisions are planned ahead of a renewed application on 19 January.

Personally like this effort but ultimately the planners will 'make or break' the scheme. It is appropriate and within context. Just hope the materials, and fine detailing between blocks of differing heights are not compromised by the budget when value engineered. Good attempt though.

Looks to be not only be an elegant solution to the car park problem but an improvement on what's there in it's own right. Approve!

I like the basic concept but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. I'm hoping this is an initial sketch.

... The car park (…. the large extruded sketch up mass behind ) hasn’t been built yet and might never be. Appropriate within the theoretical context of an unapproved 1,700 space car park maybe? Jumping the gun a bit.

Therefore the whole proposal is actually totally over scaled and gives no consideration to how the existing urban block is used by pedestrians (through route at queen street station) or its relationship to the immediate context.

a large amorphous mass of concrete seems to be rear ending this building. glass elements on the front are just lipstick on a gorilla ..... Concrete modernist brigade strikes again. nuf said

It appears there's a Big Chantelle imposter in post #5. Whilst I agree with the sentiment of the post, it isn't me folks. I'd never use 'gorilla' in a sentence.
