Contractors sought for St James Centre redevelopment
September 25 2014
Developers behind an ambitious £850m transformation of Edinburgh’s grungy St James Shopping Centre have begun hunting for contractors as plans to return the site into a mixed-use destination step up a gear.TIAA Henderson Real Estate plan to deliver office space, 138 homes, an apart-hotel and a theatre on the site of the sprawling 1970s complex to designs by Allan Murray Architects and BDP.
This has seen conservation specialists Purcell brought on board to oversee renovation of listed buildings within the site boundary. A separate design competition will also be held to elicit proposals for a ‘striking’ hotel to anchor the development.
Demolition isn’t expected to get underway until late 2015 with completion following some four years later.
The scheme will be delivered in tandem with a TIAA Henderson’s £230m Buchannan Galleries redevelopment in Glasgow, on which the developer is partnering with Land Securities.
