Glasgow School of Art has chosen Tontine East in the city centre to serve as a temporary art school during rebuilding work at the fire damaged Mackintosh building – a painstaking process that is expected to last up to five years.

The school selected the B-listed property from a number of possible options owing to its central location, natural light and high ceilings which render it readily convertible into ‘work pods’ and open plan offices for 270 students and 30 staff.

In a statement the school’s planning consultants, Ryden, said: “As a consequence of the devastating fire at the iconic Mackintosh Building, located in Garnethill, there is now an urgent need to relocate the students and staff from the Mackintosh Building to temporary accommodation elsewhere.

"It is expected that the remedial works to the Mackintosh building will likely take 2-3 years, although it is not possible to be precise at this stage. Therefore it is considered prudent to apply for a temporary consent for 5 years which allows for the complete reinstatement of the Mackintosh Building and also minimises any disruption to the student’s academic life.”

The GSA hope to appoint an architect team by the spring.
