Maryhill Health Centre set for autumn start
NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde have revealed that they intend to begin construction of Maryhill Health Centre this autumn, following a delay in reaching financial close.

The Archial NORR designed scheme had originally been due to complete by March 2015 but this has now been pushed back to early 2016.

Costed at £12m the scheme will bring four GP Practices together on one site as well as providing a range of associated health services and a community café.

Designed around an internal street/atrium, the centre will provide pedestrian access between Gairbraid Avenue and Kelvindale Road, offering pedestrians direct access through the Wyndford estate to the Forth & Clyde canal.

Composed of a brick base below a striking sloping metal form the health centre is designed to hide rooftop plant whilst respecting the domestic scale of adjacent housing..

In their design statement Archial NORR wrote: “Above the ground floor the GP’s and private office spaces are held within a bold angled metal clad box which rests directly above the brick to the west and cantilevers a large ‘TV’ screen to the east. Each entrance is highlighted through considered articulation of each gable to the metal box which also gathers fenestration and offers signage opportunities.”

A spokesperson for NHS Greater and Clyde added: “Planning Permission for the new Maryhill Health and Care Centre has been approved and ‘financial closure’ is expected by mid September 2014. The work is expected to begin on site by November 2014 with a building completion date of March 2016. After the building has been ‘handed over’ there will be 2 month commissioning period thus the opening of the new Health and Care Centre is likely to be summer 2016.”

New health centres are also planned at Eastwood, Gorbals and East Pollokshields.
