Fire service recognised with special dedication at the Scottish Design Awards
June 6 2014
Tribute has been paid by architects towards the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service following their heroic efforts to save the Glasgow School of Art during a special dedication held at last night’s Scottish Design Awards. At the event, sponsored by Urban Realm, the emergency services quick-wittedness and bravery in preventing a terrible loss from becoming a national calamity was cited as a true inspiration.
Assistant chief officer Dave Boyle, the director of service delivery for the West of Scotland, commented: “On behalf of SFRS I would like to say thank you for this recognition of our crews. It’s easy to overlook the huge challenge that faced our crews.
“The Mackintosh is a world renowned building but it was never designed to slow down fire and features like hidden voids allow flames to move from one point to another extremely quickly. Fighting the fire from both inside and outside the building gave us the best chance of stopping the flames and the early decisions made by our crews and incident commanders proved crucial.”
The show had to go on however in typically boisterous bash on the well-worn floorboards of Glasgow’s Radisson hotel Scotland’s best new buildings were celebrated in a night of celebration with Reiach & Hall Architects once again leading the way, picking up a Grand Prix for their Battle of Bannockburn visitor centre as well as being named best practice.
