August 22 2007
Construction has begun on an integrated housing development outside of Glasgow which aims to highlight the demand for affordable housing and special needs accommodation, commissioned by Cube Housing Association.Designed by Armitage Assoicates, the Burns Drive development in Johnstone looks to demonstrate good architectural practice by meeting the individual requirements of six tenants with a range of physical and behavioural needs, as well as providing accommodation for another 24 families.
Lead architect and partner Jeremy Armitage said: “Delivering maximum independence is key to this project, and so we have ‘designed in’ a host of subtle equipment- controlling technologies, combined with maximum flexibility in room layout, walls and fittings, backed up with extremely robust soundproofing.”
The six flats boast a number of safety features as well as overnight accommodation for carers, and have even been designed to meet the changing needs of the tenants.
