University of Glasgow detail campus development plan
The University of Glasgow and Page\Park have fleshed out their plans for the Western Infirmary site by showcasing their current thinking at a public consultation.

This calls for the creation of a new ‘global entrance’ off Dumbarton Road to improve connections between the University main building and Kelvingrove Art Gallery by setting out a new public square on the site of the current hospital.

Historic buildings at the Byres Road/Church Street triangle would be integrated into this new space providing opportunities for extension and adaptation.

In conjunction with this public realm improvements would also be carried out to existing streets and spaces to improve pedestrian permeability and minimise the intrusion of vehicle traffic.

In a statement the University of Glasgow’s principal and vice chancellor said: “A year ago we were able to announce that we had reached agreement with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to acquire the fourteen acre site currently occupied by the Western Infirmary in an area bounded by Dumbarton Road, Church Street and University Place.

“This Donaldshill site has always been integral to the University and was bought in the 1860s at the same time as Gilbert Scott was starting work on his masterpiece, the main building on the adjacent site.

“We now have the opportunity for a carefully planned and integrated expansion of our campus by up to 25 per cent.”

These ideas will be explored further over the summer prior to developing more detailed master plans next year.
