Work gets underway on Edinburgh retirement village
April 15 2014
Contractors have moved on site of a 54 home retirement village in Moredun, Edinburgh, offering purpose built accommodation to cater for the city’s ageing population.Designed by Smith Scott Mullan on behalf of Castle Rock Edinvar the scheme is intended to allow its occupants to live independently for as long as possible through easy access, adaptability for mobility aids and interiors designed to minimise anxiety and confusion.
Conceived as two perimeter blocks sharing a new street on the edge of Moredun Park the scheme incorporates its own secure residents courtyards with extensive soft landscaping helping to prioritise pedestrians over cars.
In their design statement the architects note: “Architecturally, the proposals offer a carefully considered development that both responds to immediate low-height, low-density residential environment and creates a strong new edge to the adjacent public park. By stepping up to 4-storeys at its prominent corner the development will create a visual landmark, encouraging pedestrian movement down through the park and long the new street created to link to Moredun Park Street.”
