Paterson designs sustainable houses for Cupar

Paterson Architects have been commissioned to design three new family homes in Cupar, Fife. The client, MAB Ltd, is a development company established in 2006 with the specific aim to design and build contemporary sustainable homes across .

The site enjoys an edge of town location and benefits from open views to the west. The houses are modern interpretations of traditional Scottish long houses, orientated to the south and west to benefit from passive solar gain. The new homes have entrance courtyards and ancillary buildings to the front and extensive gardens to the rear. The forms and design have echoes of the agricultural buildings that currently occupy and surround the site.

The external rendered walls, in muted colours reminiscent of the East Neuk of Fife, are highly insulated with deep chamfered window reveals which provide shade in summer and allow sunlight to penetrate in winter. The use of non-structural partitions enables flexible loose fit planning and lifetime occupation. The structural engineer is David Narro.
