St Andrews student housing to get underway
January 14 2014
Work to build a 135 room student housing development in St Andrews is to get underway this spring after the scheme was given the go ahead by Fife planners.Alumno Developments propose to erect the building on the site of an existing nursery at East Sands, providing replacement provision and a landscaped outdoor space linking to the beachfront.
Designed by Carson and Partners the scheme follows refusal of an earlier 2012 application with a contemporary interpretation of the local built form.
Consisting of three blocks stepped in height from 1.5 storeys to 2.5 storeys to address changes in level the scheme gains traditionally proportioned gable elevations, composed chiefly of brick and pre-patinated zinc.
David Campbell, Alumno’s managing director, said: “We are delighted to have been given the green light by local councillors, who played a key role in helping us to hone this important development to suit such a special location in St Andrews.
“We are now hard at work to ensure we can start on the site within the next two months, with a view to completing the development in the summer of 2016, ready for the 2016/17 academic year.”
