Aberdeen Aquatics Centre takes shape
October 24 2013
Aberdeen Sports Village’s £18.2m Aquatics Centre has taken a significant step toward completion with both its 25 and 50m pools being filled with water for the first time. The elite facility will eventually contain a combined total of 4.5m litres of water with a load of 4,500 tonnes, making the pumping process a delicate operation.
Kenny Gunnyeon, business development manager at Aberdeen Sports Village said: “As we head into the tail end of the year, we can sense the anticipation of the opening of the Aquatics Centre, particularly now as the exterior is virtually complete and those in the local area can clearly see the facility taking shape.
“At every stage, I feel it is important to acknowledge that, without significant donations from key sponsors, we would never have been able to create such an impressive facility. As well as our three main partners, the University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen City Council and sportscotland, other groups including FirstGroup and Saltire Energy have kindly assisted in financially backing the project.”
Designed by Faulkner Brown and built by Graham Construction the facility is scheduled to officially open early next year.
