The Michael Wood Sport & Leisure Centre in Glenrothes, one of three such facilities delivered in recent months by Fife Council, is to serve as a flagship facility for the region.

The £21.5m centre houses a 25m main pool and 20m training pool complete with an adjoining health suite - complemented by a gym, studio, sports hall and squash courts.

Built by Graham Construction and designed by B3/Cre8 architecture the centre has attained a very good BREEAM rating and employs rainwater harvesting and biomass boilers.

In a design statement Cre8 said: “The large sports hall and pool hall volumes combine to generate a striking contemporary facility with the complex juxtaposition of cubic forms flooding the interior with natural light delivering spatial intrigue and delight. Dramatic glazed slots offer glimpse views into the pool hall while the glazed fitness suite that activates the frontage to Viewfield Road enjoys expansive landscape views. 

“The foyer, reception and cafe are positioned to connect visually to all key functions within the building with key linkages between changing and sports areas and connections to quality cafe areas.”

Surrounding grounds play host to a number of synthetic pitches which have been laid alongside a revamped athletics track on the site of the former Fife Institute, demolished in July 2012.
