Construction gets underway on Odeon redevelopment
August 19 2013
Construction work has commenced on a landmark redevelopment of Glasgow’s former Odeon cinema following the demolition of its auditoriums.Sir Robert McAlpine are now on site as design and build contractor on behalf of developers Mountgrange and M&G Real Estate, delivering 143,000sq/ft of grade A office and retail space by the first quarter of 2015.
Situated immediately behind the retained art deco entrance block the gmaRyder designed build will include a double height ground floor level and 40 space car park below and is expected to achieve an EPC ‘A’ and BREEAM ‘Very Good’ ratings.
Alison Taylor, director at property advisers GVA, said: “1 West Regent Street is a key development for Glasgow, not just in the high quality space and flexibility it offers, but also for its excellent sustainability, design credentials and public transport links. It benefits from an enviable location which is not only in the Central Business District but is also next to Glasgow’s most popular retail zone.
“The predicted shortage of Grade A space in Glasgow and lack of new development is encouraging occupiers with requirements to consider pre-letting opportunities.”

And so with the erasing of the old Odeon a huge chunk of urban social history and folk memory also begins to vanish - Glasgow once had one of the highest cinema-going populations of any city in the world.

edward, i have nothing against the old brick element being demolished, it was arguably unusable and a delerict block, it's a shame, but it wasnt to sit there forever. I dont even have much against the scale and massing of its replacement, if as im sure folk will argue, it is the only viable way to get the project going. What i am a bit disappointed by, is that the old art deco part is getting walled off and left untouched (please correct me if my understanding of this is wrong). Outwith a larger development such as this one, the oppurtunnity to do something with it may never really come, and if it's getting left behind, as everything so far suggests, it's a real shame. it can't really be called 'a redevelopment of the old odeon', bur more of a brand new office development in a partly created gap site.

The Art Deco corner is bound to become a swanky bar/restaurant to serve rapunters in the office....makes sense, its on a Friday 5pm strip.
Another stonking office building for Glasgow - good for the city's self esteem.
