Raasay House celebrates £4.5m rebuild
July 9 2013
A £4.5m project to rebuild an A listed mansion on the Isle of Raasay is to be celebrated this weekend with a number of events and activities following the completion of an extensive rebuild.Raasay House Community Company, with funding from Highlands & Islands Council, The Big Lottery and Historic Scotland, commissioned Wittets Architects to transform the building into a new outdoor centre, offering accommodation, café, bar and restaurant for locals and holidaymakers.
The historic home was acquired by the local community in 2007 and was in the final stages of refurbishment when disaster struck and the structure was gutted by fire in January 2009.
Attempts to restart the project were later stymied when main contractor, Rok Construction, went into administration.
David Westgarth, chairman of RHCC said: “Seven years ago the Raasay community acquired Raasay House and set about securing the funding package to refurbish the building, and establishing a tenant that would pay a rent to the community. After numerous setbacks and frustrations that goal has now been achieved.
“Raasay House is now a magnificent building with a new interior and new roofs throughout but looking as it always did from the outside.”
