July 3 2013
Lewis & Hickey have unveiled a £36.6m refurbishment of the University of Edinburgh’s A listed Main Library, heralded as one of the city’s finest modernist buildings and part of a wider programme of updates at the Universities George Square campus.Designed by Sir Basil Spence, Glover & Ferguson and completed in 1967 the revamped library retains the majority of its original design features whilst its services and specifications were upgraded to meet the needs of contemporary research and learning.
New facilities include new storage systems, IT enabled ‘pods’, a meeting and training suite, two cafes and open plan offices and meeting rooms.
Following a five year refit the facility now benefits from a chilled beam system with energy efficient fluorescent luminaires, together with presence and daylight sensors. Double glazing has also been installed, as have raised metal floors to allow for greater flexibility in the installation of services.
