Demolition commences on former Selfridges site
July 2 2013
JCJ Group have commenced demolition of a number of unsafe buildings in a three acre block at the heart of Glasgow’s Merchant City, following eleven years of stalled plans to build a Selfridges store on the plot. The historic site incorporates the former Goldbergs department store.
Glasgow City Council has blocked plans to turn the prominent site into a surface car park which will instead be turned into an events space with pop-up shops in time for the Commonwealth Games before making way for possible mixed use development.
Council leader Gordon Matheson said: ""Selfridges is now carrying out a controlled demolition of a number of buildings on the site. I know it will be a great relief for many of the businesses and residents in the Merchant City that activity is now taking place at this location.
"My officers will continue discussions with Selfridges on how we can use this key site which sits on a major route for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games."
