Orkidstudio have received planning permission for a new Zambian School, paving the way for an eight week volunteer construction programme to commence this summer.Mutende Project II will be the non-profit studios fourth African venture and is close to achieving its funding target to allow construction to begin.
Developed in partnership with the Harold Mwenge Memorial Academy in Chingola the project incorporates a large flexible hall space that can be subdivided into three classrooms.
Project director James Mitchell said: “The project provides a large flexible hall space that can be subdivided into three individual classrooms, with office and resource facilities to the rear of the building, this is all enclosed in a series of playful pitched roofs.
“In doing so the structural system also allows for future expansion. Working with a team of volunteers and local labourers, the project will be on site for eight weeks this summer, and has been driven by tough economic and time constraints, whilst striving to develop an innovative and inspiring structure for the school and the local community.”
