Morningside later living apartments advance

Retirement housing specialists McCarthy & Stone have completed the purchase of a former car dealership at Balcarres Street, Edinburgh, after securing planning consent for two apartment blocks containing 39 flats.Designed by The Planning Bureau the scheme incorporates two separate buildings within the existing tenement line, framing a landscaped back court and amenity areas and consisting largely of buff cast stone and pre-weathered zinc cladding panels.
Purchasers will be restricted by a Section 75 agreement to 60 years of age (55 for a spouse), similar to other McCarthy & Stone developments such as Portobello and the Barnton Hotel.
In a statement the developers said: “The design concept from the outset has been to provide prestigious, contemporary buildings of similar mass and height as the adjacent tenements, set in attractive landscaped gardens, which will make a positive contribution to the local townscape, enhancing the Plewlands conservation area.”
Demolition work is expected to commence in November for completion by the end of 2014.
