World’s largest wave power array granted approval in Lewis
May 22 2013
Aquamarine Power has secured planning permission from the Scottish Government to construct what would be the world’s largest commercial wave array. The 40MW wave energy farm would be located off the coast of Lewis with the first Oyster machines being put in place around 2017 following the installation of necessary grid infrastructure.
Up to 50 of the devices will eventually snake along a stretch of coastline from Lag na Greine to Fivepenny Borve, each connected to an onshore hydroelectric power plant.
Aquamarine Power chief executive officer Martin McAdam said: "The goal of our industry is to become commercial, and to do this we need two things - reliable technologies and a route to market. Our engineers are currently working hard on getting the technology right and we now have a site where we can install our first small farm, with a larger-scale commercial build out in the years ahead.”
