Maryhill ‘Star Map’ puts Burgh Halls in the frame
February 18 2013
A programme of public realm enhancements in Maryhill designed to complement recently completed work to the areas leisure centre and burgh hall. The work creates a new public space on Gairbraid Avenue in front of these buildings through the restoration and reintroduction of gardens, railings and underground Victorian toilets.
Public art in the form of a ‘Star Map’, created by WAVEparticle, forms the heart of this redesigned space and features a constellation of famous names associated with the former burgh. Set within a recycled glass aggregate surface it also contains a compass which evokes elements of historic stained glass windows within the halls.
Chris Rankin of landscape architects Rankin Fraser said, “The client’s aspiration was for Gairbraid Avenue to become a high quality public realm which reflects its importance at the heart of a collection of public facilities in Maryhill. Hopefully through a combination of historic repair and contemporary intervention we have met this aspiration and contributed to the ongoing regeneration of the area.”
