Andy Scott's Kelpies in Chicago
August 15 2012
The Kelpie maquettes are featured as part of Chicago Sculpture International, a prestigious year long exhibition of sixty outdoor sculptures along the Lake Michigan walkway in downtown Chicago. They are sited outside the Field Museum and are the only exhibits by a non U.S. artist in the show. The sculptures are one tenth scale maquettes of the proposed 30 metre high Kelpies sculptures which have recently begun fabrication, due to be sited at The Helix project in Falkirk / Grangemouth on the Forth & Clyde Canal.
It is hoped that placing the works in the context of a major outdoor sculpture exhibition will raise awareness of the Scottish project on an international basis.

Strange, I saw them at the Falkirk Wheel at the weekend. Just how many are there?!...

Hello David. There were 2 sets fabricated. The set at the wheel were the originals created for the Lottery Bid. The set in Chicago are refined and modelled on 2 live heavy horses [ Duke & Baron] which in turn was used to finalise the full scale structures.

I love them. I have not yet seen them in person. I love the sensitivity in the modeling of the horses.
