Kilwinning Fire Station refurb completes
July 30 2012
BMJ Architects have completed work on a refurbishment of Kilwinning Community Fire Station for Strathclyde Fire & Rescue. This entailed implementation of a new interior layout to enhance both aesthetics and operations, improving locker and shower rooms, the kitchen and canteen area, gym and TV room as well as the building’s lecture facilities and dormitory accommodation.
BMJ Architect, Natalie Russell, said: "Our design is about balance, using materials which possess a robust, durable quality without compromising the domestic warmth – as essentially the station is somewhat a home from home for the fire fighters.
"We also strived to preserve elements of the building and enhance existing features such as ribbon windows and pieces of important brass ironmongery that contain the original character of the building.”
Work was completed in three phases to allow the station to remain fully operational throughout.
