Halliday Fraser Munro to move on site with Mearns Academy
June 26 2012
Construction work on a £24M community school for Aberdeenshire Council is to commence next month following the appointment of Lend Lease as main contractor. The project is part-funded by the Scottish Government which is providing £9.7M for the new facility.Designed by Halliday Fraser Munro, the 840-pupil Mearns Academy Community Campus will be built on agricultural land on the outskirts of Laurencekirk and incorporate a community library, games hall, gymnasium, fitness suite, sports pitches and dedicated community accommodation. There is also a Police Office in the development.
The campus includes a large multi-functional central space at its heart incorporating a dining room, theatre and social space. Pupils, school staff, community stakeholders and partners have been involved in an extensive consultation process throughout the project’s development.
Two teaching wings will be arranged obliquely alongside the buildings ‘heart’ to frame views out toward Cairn O’Mount, whilst a landscaped buffer will be situated adjacent to the East Coast mainline.
The scale and massing of the school is designed to complement the town and includes a traditional pitched roof together with rendered, timber and glazed facades.

Me likey the cutting edge, hyper-realistic CGI renderings. Almost like being in the finished building!
