Leith Fort to make way for Malcolm Fraser masterplan
June 1 2012
Demolition of Leith’s notorious Fort housing complex could commence in a matter of weeks following the appointment of demolition contractor DSM.The 1960s blocks will be cleared over the summer to allow construction of 100 new homes designed by Malcolm Fraser Architects for Port of Leith Housing Association and Edinburgh City Council.
Adopting a colonies style design this will necessitate removal of part of a listed perimeter wall, a remnant of the original fort, to increase sunlight and a vehicle link through the site.
At the heart of the development will be landscaped green space as the scheme seeks to shed its association with the maligned existing block.
The block currently sits empty after its 150 tenants were rehoused.
