Haddington landmark given fresh lease of life
November 30 2011
Oliver Chapman Architects are nearing completion of a residential led refurbishment of Haddington’s B listed Courier Building, a local landmark which had long languished on the buildings at risk register.Dubbed the Maltings the project has been delivered by Whiteadder Developments in association with East Lothian Housing Association, who will use the refurbished property as their offices.
Located at a key entrance to the towns market square the development comprises three distinct buildings, parts of which date back to the 16th century, and which most recently served as the offices and printing works of the Courier.
14 super insulated homes have been inserted into this historic fabric with features brought bang up to date with inclusion of a communal heating system and sprinkers in every flat.
Project architect Michael Collins told Urban Realm: “This project has placed affordable housing back into a historic town centre, moving away from the trend of pushing such community developments to the fringes of towns.
“The significant works required to safeguard its future were procured successfully by a small private developer and contractor specialising in affordable housing, a remarkable achievement given the very tight delivery programme and funding challenges during the midst of the financial downturn.” `
