Tradeston blaze engulfs B listed building
November 28 2011
A B listed former funeral services building in Glasgow’s Tradeston district has gone up in smoke following a devastating blaze. The fire took hold at around 13:50, with smoke seen billowing from the first and third floors, swiftly spreading to consume the entire five storey structure.
At one point flames were billowing up to 100ft in height but Strathclyde Fire and Rescue were able to prevent the conflagration spreading to neighbouring historic buildings, notably the former headquarters of the Co-operative.
By 19:00 the fire still hadn't been fully extinguished.
Benmore Developments had planned to convert the derelict property into a 153 bed hotel designed by 3DReid – but had failed to find a tenant.
The former Co-operative funeral service building occupies a triangular island site on Morrison Street

Who or what caused this fire? Was it another one of those mysterious 'accidents'?
Another beautiful building will no doubt be gone from Glasgow. Shame.

Bella is right. To quote the fire brigade when I enquired what was afire: "it will be another car park before the year's out".

It was quite an impressive sight. It probably looks better as a smoking hulk than the hotel that was proposed though.

It was quite trashed inside, but still had a lot of lovely features - I took some pictures inside a couple of years ago:

Scotland has a lot of listed, stone buildings that spontaneously combust when in process of/waiting for development. Strange isn't it. Check the owners insurance claim and plans for development.
