August 25 2011
Susan Stephen Architects on behalf of London Cornwall Property Partners have submitted plans for the demolition of a redundant theatre building at Elm Row Pend, Edinburgh, to allow erection of 140 student rooms.Clad in a mixture of facing brick, concrete panels, timber cladding, stone and glass curtain wall the scheme will incorporate landscaping of an existing courtyard pend.
Located within the New Town conservation area the scheme is nevertheless intended as a contemporary design by retaining the existing industrial aesthetic whilst minimising encroachment on surrounding properties.
A long standing gap site on Montgomery Street will be repaired with a natural stone clad infill block.
Queen Margaret University vacated the drama unit in 2007 and the property has remained derelict ever since.
