VIDEO: Construction commences on Craigmillar community hub
August 11 2011
A community hub serving residents of Craigmillar has moved a step closer to being realised with the completion of a sod cutting ceremony in the Edinburgh district.Located at the heart of Craigmillar town centre the neighbourhood office and library will bring services together on one state of the art campus, replacing several former premises that were no longer fit for purpose when it opens in early 2013.
The centre is being built as part of the hub south east Scotland programme, a partnership between the public and private sectors.
It is the second such initiative following the start of work on Drumbrae library in west Edinburgh earlier in the year.
GRAHAM Construction has been appointed main contractor for the scheme, masterplanned by Broadway Malyan.
Council Leader Jenny Dawe said: "This new facility will be a modern, fully-equipped and accessible community 'hub' which makes it convenient for local residents by offering a wide range of services under one roof.
“As well as contributing to the Council's Green Transport Plan, the building will be very cost effective to run - which is of crucial importance as we continue to face turbulent economic times."
