Aberdeen Council HQ opens for business
June 23 2011
Aberdeen’s brand new council HQ, behind the historic granite façade of Marischal college, has opened for business following a three years of restoration work.Designed by the Holmes partnership the 174,000sq/ft project has entailed transformation of the world’s second largest granite building into modern office space.
Costed at £65m the scheme entailed erection of a new rooftop extension and infill of a previous entrance pend to form a new lobby.
Internally the building has been entirely gutted to accommodate 174,000sq/ft of contemporary office space but retains the ornate, wood panelled ‘Grant Room’ has been retained for wedding receptions.
Council leader John Stewart said: “What we have collectively achieved is the completion of one of the most exciting construction projects in the whole of the UK and a civic building in which the people of Aberdeen can take enormous pride."
By the end of September Marischal College will be home to 1,323 council staff.
