June 7 2011
John O’Groats, winner of the 2010 Carbuncle award, is to play host to a community celebration this July to celebrate the planned redevelopment of the famed tourist haunt.‘Transform’ will see the street art, video projections, storytelling and music as part of a wider arts strategy being drawn up for the northerly village.
Carol Gunn, of Highlands and islands Enterprise, said: “One of the messages we got loud and clear from local people is that the future shape of John O’Groats, while meeting the needs of tourists, should also reflect the culture and heritage of the village.”
“We have appointed a group of artists to kick-off the redevelopment through a range of exciting new projects, many involving the community as contributors. This community work has already started and the artists' projects will culminate in this weekend of arts activity for all the family with temporary works, events and an arts ceilidh.”
Highlands & Islands Enterprise are spearheading a four phase regeneration of the community, kicking off with the redevelopment of the forlorn John O’Groats hotel into holiday apartments.
