Perth mounts 2012 city bid
May 27 2011
Perth is mounting a campaign to become Scotland’s seventh city in a competition set up to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.Local politicians are keen to regain the status such a title would bring by being elevated to the same status as the UKs premier urban centres – and have secured the backing of First Minister Alex Salmond to do so.
With a population of just 45k however Perth is only the 13th most populous town in Scotland with the 74k residents of Paisley currently the largest community in the country not to be designated with status.
The historic centre is also facing stiff competition from 11 English towns all of which are double its size.
Perth has been a town since 1975 when local government re-organisation saw the “Fair City” demoted.
