National Museum of Scotland reaches architectural completion
A £46.4m remodelling of the National Museum of Scotland is now architecturally complete allowing a full interior fit out to be conducted ahead of the museums July 2011 opening.

Gareth Hoskins Architects have expanded the museum’s gallery spaces to accommodate new artefacts whilst restoring period features of the grade A listed landmark.

Centrepiece of this space is a dramatic birdcage chamber designed by the Royal Engineer Captain Francis Fowke.

Vaulted spaces beneath Chambers Street have also been excavated to fashion a new entrance hall and allowing installation of a four storey display rising through the museums central atrium.

Praising the “extraordinary atmosphere” of the museum, project architect Gareth Hoskins said: “Our role has been to develop a considered masterplan for the redevelopment, identifying opportunities for expansion and modernisation, whilst retaining, and in cases, reinstating the original grandeur of the building.”

Urban Realm has been granted a sneak preview of the revamped museum and will report on the work later in the week.
