A series of forums on public art, called “Speaking of Art”, aim to raise the level of discussion about the role of art in regenerating cities. Preston City Council, University of Central Lancashire, Arts Council England NW, Lancashire County Council and the North West Development Agency place importance on the role that public art and urban design can play in achieving the city’s objectives. “There is also recognition that there is a need to move the subject higher up the agenda,” said Ian Banks, the organiser of the event. The seminars are connected to a programme of temporary artworks commissioned for sites, predominantly in Preston city centre, to take place between 2004-7. The programme will run in venues across the city from this month The initial programme consists of eight events running until June 2005.Read next: Simpson appointed on ATS site
