First speakers announced for Manchester Urban Summit

The ODPM has announced some of the speakers that will be involved in the second international Urban Summit – the “Delivering Sustainable Communities Summit” – to be held in Manchester between 31 January and 2 February 2005.Mercedes Bresso, MEP and former president of Turin, John Norquist and Norman Rice from the USA, Sir Peter Hall, Director of Community Studies will join Councillor Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council. More speakers will be announced in due course.
The event, which will take place at the GMEX/MICC and Bridgewater Hall, hopes to attract 2,000 delegates from the public, private and community sectors around the world. It will examine the impact of national and global trends, share best practices from across the world and provide a platform to work with leading experts from the public, voluntary and private sectors. The first Urban Summit took place in Birmingham in 2002, and this second event will discuss the progress made in the delivery of new and regenerated sustainable communities since the publication of the Deputy Prime Minister\'s Sustainable Communities Plan in February 2003. There will be keynote presentations, plenaries, workshops and expert master-classes, as well as site visits, fringe events and an extensive exhibition. A gala dinner with Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud will host the Deputy Prime Minister\'s Award for Sustainable Communities.
