M80 bypass nears completion
February 3 2011
An 11 mile section of the M80 motorway connecting the Glasgow suburbs of Stepps and Haggs celebrates a significant milestone this week when the Moodiesburn bypass is opened to traffic. The five mile section is designed to reduce journey times on the Glasgow to Stirling route when it opens to northbound traffic on Feb 7 and to southbound traffic on Feb 13.
Transport Scotland and HMG commenced work on the bypass in 2009 but the complexity of the scheme saw costs soar from a projected £180m to £320m.
Eight bridges and 11 culverts were required to carry local roads and footpaths over the carriageway whilst seven water courses and roads had to be dug underneath the bypass.
Once complete attention will switch to the Mollinsburn Interchange where the M73 and M80 meet.
