Mixed use masterplan announced for RAF Edzell
December 20 2010
Austin-Smith:Lord has announced plans for a £250m mixed use development on a former RAF base in Aberdeenshire.RAF Edzell in Newesk will be redeveloped to include some 1,000 homes alongside 125 hectares set aside for business use together with associated improvements to mains water and sewerage supplies.
Carnegie Base Services are masterminding the 10 to 15 year vision with a view to submitting a full planning application in early 2011.
David Carnegie said, "There is a serious shortfall of industrial and residential land in both south Aberdeenshire and north Angus and this development will help to not only address that. It is a brownfield site, with an established use for residential and business development, and as such can help to protect our greenbelt from encroachment."
Austin-Smith:Lord’s Graham Ross added: “There are numerous fine examples of planned settlements throughout the north-east of Scotland and this masterplan seeks to extend that proud tradition into the 21st century. Newesk will fuse contemporary best urban design practice with a sensitive response to the fabulous landscape setting to capture the area's unique sense of place.”
Archial Planning, NVA Traffic Consultants, Mott MacDonald engineers are also serving on the design team.

Agreed, there are "numerous fine examples of planned settlements throughout the north-east of Scotland" - unfortunately, this doesn't resemble any of them in scale, density, or form. Just look at that body of water in the top corner - such a beautiful natural form!!

If you know RAF Edzell, you will realise that the water feature is an existing reservoir/ pond in a low-lying area, so it's not been "designed" - it is what it is.

Actually, this is pretty good in comparison to ASL's various news items and recent project features. Some pretty desperate stuff has been released to various websites and forums
