Work begins on Northern Design Centre

Work has begun on Red Box Designs £9.9m Northern Design Centre in Gateshead within the city’s Baltic Business Quarter.The four storey building is being developed by Gateshead Council and regional development agency One North East in a bid to promote design and innovation.
It will offer 4,800sq/m of office space to companies alongside creativity, exhibition and research areas. These will play host to the regions design industry, acting as a creative resource for service providers and manufacturers.
Councillor Mick Henry, Leader of Gateshead Council said: “We believe the Northern Design Centre building could provide exactly the workspace which locally-based knowledge-based companies are crying out for.”

Remember Alsop's 'Public'? Complete tosh - closed down before it was even finished - this scheme reeks of the same lack of substance.

Alsop's 'Public' is exactly what came to mind when I saw this too... if you are going to pick an inspirational precedent, then I would suggest that particular scheme lying somewhere towards the bottom of the list of places to start.
