Moray Council relocate offices to disused supermarket
November 2 2010
A disused supermarket in Elgin is to become an unlikely new home for Moray Council after the authority appointed Bennetts Associates together with Acanthus Architects to undertake a full remodelling of the redundant building. Now on site the £4m scheme will help rationalise the council’s sprawling estate of 21 office buildings down to just two with 3,000sq/m of flexible office space.
The existing structure, which comprises a long span steel shed clad in blockwork and precast concrete, will be retained to accommodate wind towers and roof lights to maximise natural ventilation and light within the deep plan space.
In addition the buildings entrance will be relocated to Elgin’s mediaeval High Street and internal finishes will be stripped out to expose the steel structure. Custom designed pods will be also be inserted to provide meeting rooms amidst the open plan floorplate.
Rab Bennetts, Director of Bennetts Associates, said: “This project is a timely example of how neglected buildings of numerous typologies can be reinterpreted into cost-effective and imaginative spaces.”
