Tesco unveil Glasgow Harbour plans

A public consultation has been initiated by Tesco for a 50m superstore on the banks of the Clyde.

Located at Glasgow Harbour the tentative plans detail a scheme providing some 100,000sqft of floorspace.

The plans remain subject to change but outline an anticipated 252 flats, shops, cafes, a landscaped public space and a pontoon.

The exhibition will take place at Partick and Whiteinch libraries for two days from Mon Nov 1. Tesco hope that this will turn negative public opinion onside by plumping for a less contentious site than their originally mooted Beith Street plan nearby.

Fantastic news for the area. At last we will have superior shopping facilities in the area which will also bring new jobs to the area.

I suspect 'Karen Cranston' may be an employee of Tesco PLC. I strongly object to the proposed location of this supermarket. Shops like this should be hidden away at outer-city business parks, and not built on prime riverside land. I hope this plan is thrown out.

It will be a sad day for Glasgow if prime river front space is devoted to this lumpen box and acres of depressing tarmac car park.
Entirely the wrong place for a crap, low density, suburban, mono culture use such as this, and I sincerely hope Glasgow's planners are intelligent enough not to be fooled by the shiny shiny.

Firstly, out of town is not the place for supermarkets George, high streets have a hard enough time as it is.

GCC need only look at the tesco on Dundee Riverside - the shop and its massive car park dominate many views over the river. Doesn't stagnate the use of the river too badly as there's a public walkway along the whole front, so be interesting to see the proposed site layout here in Glasgow. Sunday afternoon walk along the river and through a tesco car park anyone?

Totally unrequired development which cannot be said to serve the area as the locale is adequately served by the other supermarkets in the area. Notwithstanding the fact that the once proud harbour quay development which should be a crown piece of architectural design will now be known as Tesco town as the rest of the development is stagnant. Peel must have been desperate to have offered Tesco the opportunity however they may find that other users the locale even more unattractive

Considering a giant new Tesco has just opened in Maryhill; open 24 hrs and dominating the landscape within that area - surely this is enough Tesco Action in the west end for the time being... what with all the little metro Tescos in the area as well, i think enough is enough!

This article is wrong. I walked through the pouring rain to Partick Library yesterday (November 1st), only to be bluntly told that the public exhibition was on last Monday - i.e. the day this feature was published. Poor show.

Apologies for the needless soaking Neil, posted this remotely and thus didn't phone to confirm the Clyde Waterfront dates.

I'll try and get hold of the exhibition materials and post them online by way of recompense.
