Gunpowder Mill named best new building outside London
October 14 2010
The Roses Design Awards 2010 have awarded Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects Gunpowder Mill, Essex, with the title of best new building outside London after the Mill exploded onto the stage with this year’s Architecture Grand Prix.Winning over the Roses judges for achieving the seeming impossible, a symbiotic marriage of 19th century gunpowder works with a new build glazed office pavilion the building resonated through its honest and conscientious pursuit of quality.
Said event organiser Gordon Young: “The Roses Design Awards provide a lasting tribute to the energy, passion and professionalism of both clients and architects whilst providing an ideal platform for the celebration of superlative design.
“This year’s work really got our juices flowing with a provocative mix of schemes which challenged our preconceptions of what makes a successful place. Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects are to be congratulated for ending this year’s Roses with a bang.”
Awards were available in a host of categories ranging from: Best Interior Design, Best Residential Project, Best Affordable Housing Project, Best Re-Use of a Listed Building, Best Commercial Project, Best Public Building, Best Regeneration, Best Place making, Best Proposed Building, Best Low Cost Project, Engineering Design and Sustainable Design.
A panel of leading architects and writers, chaired by the Owen Luder, winner of last years Rubble Club trophy for best demolished building the Tricorn Centre, provided this years results. They were: Peter Wilson - Napier University; Stephen Furnell – Furnell Associates; Dirk Krolikowski – Roger Stirk Harbour + Partners; Lorenzo Apicella – Pentagram London and Paul Monaghan – Allford Hall Monaghan Morris.
Explaining his decision to award top honours to the Gunpowder Mill, Wilson said it would be an “outstanding project in any award.” A sentiment shared by Apicella who said its win was “all in the details” and “beautiful craft.”
Austin Smith Lord triumphed in the architect team of the year category, scooping an interior bronze for the Maritime Dining Rooms and an education silver for the Tom Reilly building, Liverpool. It caps a remarkable year for a practice which is soon to open an Abu Dhabi office and which has won widespread plaudits for their Roseisle Distillery building.
Awarding the Chairman’s award to Des Matos Ryan’s Round House in the other big win of the night Luder said: “The Round House is a superb modern building that gets to the whole business of marrying the modern with the past in a way which I think is really quite outstanding.”
