Midland Hotel set to get support from the development agency
November 19 2004
The NWDA is rumoured to have made a decision to give financial support to the Urban Splash for the redevelopment of the Midland Hotel in Morecambe. An announcement confirming the NWDA’s committment is expected shortly.Urban Splash was granted planning permission for the redevelopment of the Midland Hotel in Spring this year. The redevelopment has been designed by Liverpool-based architects Union North, and Avanti, experts in the adaptation of twentieth century buildings. However, the funding package for the project appeared to be in jeopardy when the NWDA announced that they were putting a halt to funding on many of their capital investment projects.
Urban Splash plans to restore the hotel, retaining many of the original features and adding a roof terrace and an outdoor bath. Lancaster City Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund are also involved in supporting the scheme. The developer has been involved in an ongoing consultation with local groups to identify how best to develop the area surrounding the hotel. Parts of the area, which provides fantastic views across Morecambe Bay, are now in poor condition.
