EICC expansion breaks ground in Edinburgh
July 29 2010
Work has broken ground on an £85m expansion of Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC).It marks the final phase of the city’s Exchange masterplan and will accommodate a 2,000sq/m hall and 186,000sq/ft of Grade A office space when it completes in 2013.
Designed by BDP the extension comprises an underground extension to EICC with a bespoke moving floor system to allow the main hall to be configured for exhibition, banqueting and arena set ups.
A separate office building occupies airspace above the main hall and boasts a dramatic seven storey high atrium and a 15m cantilever where it overhangs Conference Square.
An entrance pavilion with café and lettable office space links these disparate elements.

Shame. The Farrell scheme originally proposed for the site was of a far higher design quality - at least based on this image. Good to see something finally progress, but the quality seems to have suffered in my opinion.
