Future secured for Aberdeen’s Tivoli Theatre
June 30 2010
A Venetian/Gothic theatre in Aberdeen, designed by Charles John Phipps and James Matthews with later alterations by Frank Matcham, could be saved from dereliction after a £520k was awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.Owner Brian Hendry has prepared a business plan for the forgotten edifice outlining how it could be transformed into a new mixed use venue for the granite city.
Tivoli Theatre is grade A listed but currently languishes on the Buildings at Risk Register, though its condition is described as “fair”.
The grant will be used by Hendry to construct a new roof and to make the theatre wind and watertight and follows £400k of urgent repair work carried out by the businessman..
Hendry will retain the auditorium and stage in his £4m plan whilst opening up the possibility of incorporating a dance stusio, rehearsal space, gymnasium or function room.

Thanks for posting this article. I am definitely tired of struggling to find relevant and intelligent commentary on this subject. Everyone nowadays goes to the very far extremes to either drive home their viewpoint of that everybody else in the globe is wrong. Thanks for your consise and relevant insight.
