Ravenscraig sport hub boasts one building under 43 roofs
Ravenscraig’s regional sports facility, designed by Populous architects, has completed in Lanarkshire.

Despite accommodating an athletics track, indoor football hall, sports hall and a fitness studio the building is perhaps best defined by its external appearance, which boasts no fewer than 43 roofs all held aloft by walls of metallic sinusoidal sheets.

In total subcontractor Lakesmere installed 22,000sq/m of roofing and walls for contractor Balfour Beatty, ensuring that the structural steelwork was positioned correctly to support the elaborate roof and wall geometry.

This entailed a complex process of modelling in order to ensure the correct alignment of gutters and drainage pipes within the sharply angled superstructure.

One of the largest such facilities of its type in the UK, Ravenscraig will provide key training facilities for athletes competing in the 2012 Olympic Games and 2014 Commonwealth Games.
