RIAS, in partnership with the Scottish Government’s Scottish Sustainable Communities Initiative (SSCI), have launched a competition that seeks housing and urban design proposals which reduce carbon emissions and respond to place and context.

It is hoped a “new vernacular” will emerge from this process, a demonstration of how environmentally sensitive design might influence both architecture and urban composition.

Launching the initiative Culture Minister Fiona Hyslop said: “What is different about this competition is that designs, while inspiring and innovative, must be realistic and commercially viable. Designing original and inventive buildings that can be realised and replicated is a vital element in supporting the construction sector to deliver the low-carbon communities that Scotland needs.”

Registered architects interested in entering the competition should email consultancy@rias.org.uk and complete a preliminary questionnaire. Stage two of the competition will see five shortlisted practices handed more detailed information to put together proposals with the involvement of a developer to provide information on costs and marketability.

The competition winner will receive £10k and be expected to develop their proposals further with Morton Assets.
