Archial’s Mauchline Primary completes
May 26 2010
An Edwardian Primary School at the heart of the Ayrshire village of Mauchline has received an £8m extension and refurbishment at the hands of Archial architects.Located adjacent to the former village green the site demanded a “sensitive response” said Archial director Kevin Cooper. This sees an existing ‘doughnut’ of accommodation, classrooms ranged around a series of external courtyards, retained.
The central courtyard meanwhile has been roofed over to provide a flexible space at the heart of the school.
A new gym and dining hall are incorporated within the extension wing, providing scope for combination into one flexible space as the need arises and forms the space around which secondary facilities such as staff areas, kitchen and medical suites are located.
This serves to focus pupil activity in the refurbished wing while community activities take place in the extension. A new entry point has been inserted between the two.
Mauchline Primary School is part of the £70 million East Ayrshire Schools PPP project encompassing four schools delivered by the First Class Consortium, led by German contractor Hochtief, Barr Construction and McLaughlin and Harvey.
